Li Hui To Visit Brazil, South Africa, Indonesia on Ukraine Issue

On a mission to discuss China’s peace initiative for Ukraine, China’s special envoy for Eurasian affairs Li Hui will travel to Brazil, South Africa and Indonesia beginning July 28. These three countries have also been involved in peace efforts earlier in the conflict. South Africa in 2023 was the leading nations among seven major African countries—Egypt, Senegal, Congo-Brazzaville, Comoros, Zambia, and Uganda—that were mandated by the African Union to explore a peace initiative between Russia and Ukraine. It was declared to be in the strategic interest of Africa, particularly for those nations that were now suffering higher prices for grain, fertilizer and energy because of the conflict. In addition, both South Africa and Brazil are fellow BRICS members, along with China, Russia, and also India. Indonesian President-elect and Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto put forward his own peace proposal for the Ukraine conflict in June 2023.
