The Chairman of Sudan’s Sovereignty Council Abdel Fattah al-Burhan survived an assassination attempt on July 31, when he was targeted by a “suicide bomber drone” while he was attending a graduation ceremony for military academy students at the Gebeit Military Institute in the Red Sea state of eastern Sudan, according to a Sudanese army statement. The drone was intercepted.
The attack, according to a Sudanese army statement, resulted “in the death of five martyrs and minor injuries that are currently being counted,” according to Sputnik.
During the ceremony, Al Burhan delivered a defiant speech rejecting negotiations with rebel forces and called on international mediators to recognize the government’s authority in any peace efforts.
