China has opened its nuclear power plants (NPP) to tourists, opening a new era of “nuclear tourism.” And why not? China is currently constructing no less than 30 reactors, more than half the current global construction, and has become the world’s leader in the production of nuclear scientists and engineers.

China General Nuclear Power Corp has opened an online booking system, to allow tourists to plan visits to nine NPPs across the country. They have also published a booklet of tourist information, including guide maps!

The program was launched on August 8,at the Ningde nuclear power plant in Fujian province. Officials invited visitors to see its four CPR-1000 reactors, along with the nearby fragrant white tea gardens. There are other options, including the Guangxi’s Fangchenggang station, where “majestic” Hualong One reactors are located near some famous tourist islands that are home to the Jing ethnic minority.
