IAEA chief Rafael Grossi issued a statement yesterday about the military activities taking place “in the vicinity” of the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant. The KNPP is located in the city of Kurchatov, about 60 km northeast of Sudzha. “In view of the reportedly significant military activity, I wish to remind all parties of the seven indispensable pillars for ensuring nuclear safety and security during an armed conflict,” Grossi said. “I would like to appeal to all sides to exercise maximum restraint in order to avoid a nuclear accident with the potential for serious radiological consequences,” he added.
The Russian mission in Vienna reported that rocket fragments had been found at the KNPP. “On August 8, fragments and remnants—presumably, pieces of intercepted rockets—were discovered at the plant, including in the radioactive waste processing area. So far, there’s been no direct shelling of the town of Kurchatov, NPP or energy infrastructure facilities. However, the situation remains tense,” the mission said on its Telegram channel, reported TASS. The mission noted that “Ukraine’s reckless actions are threatening not only the Russian nuclear facility but also the entire global nuclear industry.”
