Opposition is on the rise among German political layers to the ongoing, no-win war in Ukraine. On Aug. 4, Dietmar Woidke, Prime Minister of the Federal state of Brandenburg, during a Social Democratic Party election rally, called for greater efforts to intensify the negotiation process with the Russian Federation on the Ukraine conflict as soon as possible. “I expect the German government to make all possible diplomatic efforts more quickly,” Woidke said. “These contacts are necessary: We must ensure peace in Europe as quickly as possible.”
On Aug. 3, Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow of the Federal state of Thuringia actually called for the creation of a European defense union with Russia. He said that the European Union needs a European peace order that includes the Russian Federation. All member states must sign a non-aggression pact and form a defense union aimed at resolving conflicts on the European continent, he insisted.
