China and the Republic of the Congo (Brazzaville) signed a memorandum of understanding to build a 800 MW hydropower project. Named the Sounda Hydropower Project, it will be built by the China Overseas Corporation at the cost of $9.4 billion. The project is located in the Sounda gorge in the Koilou District about 140 km from Pointe-Noire. It will substantially increase the electrification of the country. With a population of some 6 million people, currently only 50% of the population have access to electricity.
“This mega dam project is slated to be completed by the year 2030. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed on Sept. 11, 2024, by the Minister of Energy and Hydraulics of the Republic of Congo Emile Ousso and the China Overseas Corporation Chief Executive Officer Li Xi Zhen. The MOU signed clearly outlined the detailed activity plan that would foresee the launching of the mega project, reported Construction Review.
