The UN General Assembly voted overwhelmingly on Oct. 30 to call on the U.S. to lift all sanctions on Cuba, with only the U.S. and Israel voting no—187 voted for the non-binding resolution and one abstention by the Republic of Moldova. This resolution has been voted on annually since 1992, with the same result, and with the U.S. ignoring it, as usual. The U.S. blockade has been in place since 1960, when Fidel Castro came into power.

Cuba’s Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla said the blockade is “a flagrant, massive and systematic violation of the human rights of our people” and “the most encompassing, comprehensive and longest-standing system of unilateral coercive measures ever applied against any country.”
