Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, the alleged ringleader of the Oct. 7, 2023 attack on Israel, was killed in an Israeli artillery attack in Gaza on Oct. 16, according to numerous press reports citing Israeli authorities. His death was reportedly not a targeted killing, however. The Israelis probably suspected that Sinwar was in the vicinity of southern Gaza and were conducting military operations in the region. There was heavy fighting in the region on Oct. 16 and an Israeli tank destroyed the building where Sinwar was located. A drone reconnaissance discovered his body. Israeli authorities then recovered it and did DNA testing and dental records to confirm that the body was that of Sinwar.
