A youth festival on Oct. ober 4-5 in Kampala, Uganda, brought together 10,000 Russian and African youth. Rosatom sponsored a conference at the festival on developing nuclear energy for Africa. The IAEA is now reviewing Uganda’s plan for exploiting uranium resources, and starting a nuclear program in 2031. Russia has expressed the commitment to bring 2000 African youth to Russia to study nuclear energy. They also have plans for setting up a nuclear training and research facility in Rwanda. Okaasai Opolot, the Uganda State Minister for Energy and Mining, explained to the youth the tremendous potential nuclear energy would have for them, and encouraged them to focus their studies in the areas of high technology, including nuclear science.
