China’s President Xi Jinping arrived in Morocco on Nov. 21 on his return from the Nov. 18-19 G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He was officially greeted at the Casablanca airport by Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan. While not an official state visit, it was one of the typical stopover visits Xi often makes during distant engagements. It is also Xi’s first visit to Morocco since becoming President of China in 2013.

Xi is accompanied by a delegation including Cai Qi, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau and Director General of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party (CPC); Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs; and Hua Chunying, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.

President Xi later was greeted by Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch. And later the Crown Prince and President Xi were then greeted by China’s Ambassador to Morocco Li Changlin, and other members of the Chinese embassy. He also met other Moroccan officials.

The visit was intended to advance the nations’ strategic partnership established by Moroccan King Mohammed VI and President Xi Jinping during the King’s landmark visit to China in May 2016.
