If Stopping War and Genocide Is Necessary, There Is a Way To Do It

by David Shavin (EIRNS) — Dec. 05, 2024

What is it that allows a global security architecture to stop wars and genocide? And is it a practical alternative to all the dirty games, the physical and mental violence, to muscle countries into the sacrifices required to keep financial speculation going another day?

One answer was provided today at the annual meeting of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), an organization that was established during the Cold War where the Comecon (Council on Mutual Economic Assistance) countries, headed by communist Russia, and non-communist Western European countries, could keep their differences, but attempt to work out their mutual survival. Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov explained at a public press conference following the session, that Russia, after dumping the Soviet system, spent over three decades wanting to believe the West meant what they said. He detailed the history of broken promises, and said that, as of 2022, they are convinced the West has bankrupted the UN, diplomacy, their own populations and everything they touch. He was blunt—that their Eurasian Security Architecture project is center stage for Russia, that it works, and that the global majority is ripe for it. He stated:

“The Eurasian concept is predicated on the natural, geographical, economic, and infrastructural opportunities accessible to all nations of the Eurasian continent. It is the largest, most populous, and fastest-growing landmass. It is home to countries representing great civilizations such as the Chinese, Indian, and Persian. We aspire to amalgamate all these opportunities of our continent to promote a common agenda that will be agreeable to all….”

And now the BRICS encompasses over half the population of the world, with most of Global Majority looking to join or to work with this new architecture, vectored around, not financial speculation, but real physical infrastructure projects for energy (nuclear and coal) and transportation (rail, ports, shipping), with terms that allow underdeveloped countries to escape the cycle of poverty.

But, one might add, Western Europe is a part of that Eurasian continent. Indeed—and Lavrov was clear that they are welcome to come to their senses and join in. But there’s panic in Brussels and London that the high energy and food costs of de-industrialization might bring cold reality to their populations, enough to break through the sales pitches. So, there’s been an hysterical effort to drown out what is being clearly stated and offered.

Even so, what of the Western Hemisphere? What of a global security architecture? Well, Russian President Vladimir Putin on Dec. 4 was clear that the U.S. has lived from setting unfair terms of trade, centered upon the weaponized use of the dollar as the reserve currency for the world. But, at the same time, when asked about President-elect Donald Trump’s attack on the BRICS for dumping the dollar, Putin offered that he heard Trump attacking those who subvert the dollar, not those who simply are no longer using the dollar. And, he explained, Russia didn’t abandon the dollar, but they were excluded from the dollar and so are finding less and less opportunity to use the dollar. It was a careful, but obviously deliberate opening.

As Lavrov explained it in his closing today: “We have learned our lessons and will never slam the door shut to relations with whoever it may be, but we will take a hard look at the kind of ideas those who have declared war on us using the Kiev regime as a proxy, who have imposed sweeping sanctions on us, and who accuse us of all mortal sins, will bring to the table. If and when they come to their senses and come up with specific ideas based on respect for each other’s interests, we will see and draw our conclusions based on what such possible proposals are actually all about.”

That global security architecture, with the U.S. and the West brought to its senses, is presented this weekend at the Schiller Institute’s conference, “In the Spirit of Schiller and Beethoven: All Men Become Brothers.” In fact, China, India and Persia aren’t the only civilizations with such massive cultural resources. Had, for example, the master poet and historian Friedrich Schiller or the powerful genius Ludwig van Beethoven not existed, they perhaps would have had to be invented on the spot—a risky adventure. But the fact is, they stand in wait for us to beckon their aid.

A global security architecture only works if the Creator is good; if mankind made in the image of the Creator wraps His mind and His life’s mission around doing the creative scientific breakthroughs that free mankind from want, from hunger, from war; if every civilization has such potential; if the richness of differences amongst populations is realized; and if, temporarily not seeing the answer to everything, the courageous moral choice to allow beauty to lead one towards truth is made. Now, that wasn’t so hard.

The invite to the Schiller Institute conference concludes:

“In order to put such a new architecture before humanity, the Schiller Institute plans to convene an international online conference on Dec. 7-8, with leading representatives and experts of the Collective West and the Global South to discuss the principles on which such a new architecture must be based. We will also provide an example of the dialogue of cultures and civilizations, with beautiful samples of great art from various nations, to show the way to establish a civilization based on, not hatred, but love.”
