There is plenty of hoopla in the Western media about a new case of alleged Chinese aggression against the U.S., such as reported by CNN under the headline “‘Major Incident’: China-Backed hHackers Breached U.S. Treasury Workstations.”
You’d almost think there was a heist at Fort Knox. But it turns out that “based on available indicators,” a “Chinese state-sponsored Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) actor” remotely accessed some Treasury workstations and got access to… “unclassified documents.” This was reported to the Senate Banking Committee leadership in a letter by Aditi Hardikar, assistant secretary for management at the U.S. Treasury.
According to the letter, a third-party software service provider, with the amusing name BeyondTrust, “said hackers gained access to a key used by the vendor to secure a cloud-based service that Treasury uses for technical support,” CNN reported. No evidence is provided that China was behind the hack.
