German Farmers Commemorate Protest Wave One Year Ago

There were numerous bonfires in southwestern Germany yesterday, with groups of farmers taking part. The actions were meant to thank the population in general for supporting their protests a year ago, but also to convey the message that central farmer demands still have not been met. A major achievement of the protest wave has, however, been a “stronger sense of unity among farmers,” protesters emphasized.

Lörrach, Rheinfelden, Freiburg, as well as Donaueschingen, Bad Säckingen, and Lahr were sites of fires, and a rally was held in Donaueschingen. As for the remaining demands, farmers pointed to the need to decrease the say of EU green bureaucrats on farmers’ work and use of fertilizer and other materials, as well as to the Mercosur Agreement as implying a stream of agricultural products from Ibero-America at prices with which European farmers cannot compete.
