NATO Claims Russia Plotting To Assassinate European Arms Maker Executives

One day after Tucker Carlson claimed that then-President Joe Biden tried to have Russian President Vladimir Putin assassinated, NATO went whole hog with its own assassination narrative, that is, that the Russians were plotting to assassinate European industrialists running arms producers, including Armin Papperger, the CEO of German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall. The alleged plot against Papperger was first reported in July 2024, but until now NATO hadn’t officially referred to it.

NATO Deputy Assistant Secretary-General for Innovation, Hybrid, and Cyber James Appathurai claimed in testimony to a European Parliament committee yesterday that the plot to kill Papperger, which was supposedly foiled by U.S. and German intelligence, was one of several Russian plans to assassinate defense industry executives across Europe, reported Politico Europe. “We have seen incidents of sabotage taking place across NATO countries over a period of the last couple of years, by which I mean derailment of trains, acts of arson, attacks on politicians’ property, plots to assassinate industry leaders, like publicly the head of Rheinmetall, but there were other plots as well,” Appathurai told a EU Parliament committee meeting on hybrid warfare Jan. 28.

Appathurai claimed that the Russians recruit personnel for their plots online, using “criminal gangs or unwitting youth or migrants” to carry out the criminal acts. “They are generally crudely done, but they are done with a purpose, which is to create disquiet to undermine support for Ukraine,” the NATO official added.
