The task of reconstructing Syria after years of war and economic sanctions is immense. The health and energy sectors are in particular need of development.
A Turkish technical delegation in Damascus says it is there to assess the country’s energy needs and the reconstruction of its oil and gas sector. Speaking to reporters, Türkiye’s Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said the delegation has been in Damascus since Dec. 28.
Syria’s pre-war installed electrical generating capacity of 8,500 MW has declined to 3,500 MW, while the vast majority of Syrians meet their electricity needs with generators. While Türkiye currently provides electricity and energy services to some regions in Syria, it is prepared to expand the service if necessary. Both Syria and Lebanon can import the electricity they need from Türkiye, the minister said.
