Syrian Leader Demands Israel Withdraw From Buffer Zone on Golan Heights

Calls for Israel to withdraw its troops from the buffer zone on the Golan Heights were made during the visit to Qatar by Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa on January 16. “The Israeli occupation’s seizure of the buffer zone is a reckless... act and it must immediately withdraw,” Qatar’s leader Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani said at a press conference with al-Sharaa. “We are ready to cooperate with Syria’s new administration on various fronts, including lifting sanctions,” as well as reconstruction of Syria’s infrastructure,he said.

Al-Sharaa also called on Israel to withdraw saying, “Syria remains committed to the 1974 Disengagement Agreement and is ready to welcome UN forces to restore conditions to their prior state.” He also extended an invitation to the Qatari Emir to visit Syria.
