Russian Maritime Collegium Meets to Further ‘Technological Sovereignty’

The Russian Maritime Collegium met Jan. 23. The entity has become a center for technology development, and the event was attended by leading figures in science and engineering in Russia. Collegium Chairman Nikolai Patrushev underlined the need to fulfill the requirements laid out by President Putin in that regard. “In the context of unprecedented sanctions pressure to which our country and our allied states are subjected, our former ‘partners’ are seeking to limit Russia’s technological development,” Patrushev said, opening the meeting.

He noted that President Putin has set the task of not only ensuring the technological sovereignty of the Russian Federation, but also technological leadership, to create domestic technological solutions that will surpass world analogues in all respects.

It is noteworthy that, while there has been cautious optimism with regard to President Trump’s commitment to a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict, Trump’s more muscular comments about restoring American influence, i.e., dominance, in the world have led to increased efforts by Russia to achieve “technological sovereignty” so as not to find itself subordinate to any outside powers, including the United States.
