U.S. and NATO Outmatched by Moscow’s New Submarine

The new Russian Yasen-M submarine, which is now being deployed by the Russian Northern Fleet, totally outmatches anything in the U.S. and NATO arsenal, writes Brandon Weichert, Senior National Security Editor, in the National Interest, on Dec. 31, 2024.

“With 10 torpedo tubes (at 533 mm), the Yasen-M is meant for close combat with rival submarines,” Weichert writes. “Utilizing its ultra-quiet rigging, these sea monsters can tailgate American or NATO subs, perhaps completely undetected, then spring an attack on them with their 533 mm torpedoes.”

“For purposes of comparison, the United States Navy’s fastest boat is likely the advanced Seawolf-class nuclear-powered attack submarine, which travels at 35 knots, or 40 mph. Considering the extreme costs of the American submarine, though, compared to the relatively cheap Yasen-M class, the Russian have a scalable, cost-effective, and highly lethal boat that is more practical than the Americans systems are, unfortunately (for the West).”

Weichert explained that the Yasen-class was designed by the legendary Malakhit Marine Engineering Bureau and was to be deployed decades ago, which was prevented when the Soviet Union collapsed. That led Russian engineers to create an even more updated variant today.

It also gives the lie to the claims that Russia has been seriously economically damaged by the NATO conflict in Ukraine. On the contrary, the mobilization to defend the nation’s sovereignty has enhanced the country’s capabilities in preserving its own defense capabilities and its economic well-being. This should be a wake-up call to U.S.own political representatives to understand that the real losers in this conflict are the Western oligarchy that has brought destruction on themselves in their impulsive drive to assert their “hegemony.” Only by ending this unwinnable conflict and beginning to forge agreements with Russia and China on moving the world economy forward will the U.S. regain the ability to get its own house in order after so many decades of benign neglect and wilful blindness to the growing decay and destruction of a once-thriving economy.
