Former Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, currently head of the M5S party, has endorsed Trump’s action on Ukraine. Trump, “with roughness, unmasks all the West’s bellicose propaganda about Ukraine and speaks a truth that we in the [M5S] Movement have been saying for three years: beating Russia militarily was unrealistic,” Conte told a Rai TV interviewer. Moscow, like Beijing, he added, is a “big player with whom we cannot avoid having dialogue.” Conte called the idea of off-budget funding for defense spending “a folly.”

Conte, who had established good relations with Trump during the the U.S. President’s first mandate is, however, hypocritical: His party was a member of the Draghi government coalition and voted for all weapon deliveries and other aid to Kiev.
