The “Greengate” scandal recently exposed by the Dutch daily De Telegraaf might be the beginning of the end for the EU “Green Deal.” De Telegraaf had revealed that the EU Commission had financed a whole array of NGOs to lobby for the EU’s own Green Deal. This is proven by the records of the European Executive Agency for Climate, Infrastructure and Environment (Cinea), and by an admission by current Budget Commissioner Piotr Serafin: “I have to admit,” Serafin said,”that it was inappropriate for some services in the Commission to enter into agreements that oblige NGOs to lobby members of the European Parliament specifically.”

Under suspicion regarding the “inappropriate” use of funds, is former EU Deputy Commission President Franz Timmermans, considered to be the “brains” of the Green Deal. Timmermans insisted that he has seen “no evidence” of the allegations, and that, anyway, he was unaware of what was going on. He kept defending the Green Deal, and accused “the rightwing” of fabrications. However, according to Politico, the EU Commission had already communicated to environmentalist lobbies last November that funds for lobbying activities had been suspended.
