Russian President Vladimir Putin has held his first telephone conversation with Syria’s Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa, which was described by the Kremlin as “constructive, business-like and substantive.” This was the first discussion between the two leaders and the highest level of contact since the overthrow of the Bashar al Assad government.
According to TASS, the two leaders “thoroughly discussed” the situation in Syria. Putin emphasized Russia’s commitment to the principle of “unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Syrian state.” They also discussed the need to implement “a series of measures in order to ensure a sustainable improvement of the situation in the country, and step up intra-Syrian dialogue involving the leading political, ethnic and religious groups.”
