Russian Security Council’s Shoigu in Beijing, Meets Xi Jinping and Wang Yi

The Secretary of the Russian Security Council Sergei Shoigu paid a visit to Beijing on Feb. 28 and met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Back in November, when Shoigu was visiting China, Shoigu stressed the need for China and Russia to “counter the ‘dual containment’ policy directed against Russia and China by the United States and its satellites,” echoing the May 16, 2024 joint statement by Presidents Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping.

In his public statements, Shoigu said, “Comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation between Russia and China is an example of cooperation between two countries in the modern world. We are not a military-political alliance like during the Cold War—our relations are superior to those forms of interstate ties. Ties between China and Russia are based on the principles of mutual respect, equality, trust, non-interference in the internal affairs of the others, and support in key issues.”
