March 15, 2025 (EIRNS)—According to Bild, “climate neutrality” will be part of the deal to lift the “debt brake” and pass the €500 billion infrastructure fund next week in the Bundestag. That was the promise the Greens obtained from Chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz to secure their compromise to vote for lifting the debt brake. Thus, “Climate Protection” will be included in the Constitution.
“The Greens have now persuaded Merz to ensure that parliament also decides that with the special fund, Germany must constitutionally work towards soon only emitting as many greenhouse gases as it can offset through trees or emissions trading,” Bild wrote.
Bild cites two professors who warn about catastrophic consequences for Germany. Jan Schnellenbach of the University of Cottbus said: “If this is included in the Basic Law, it is to be expected that the Federal Constitutional Court will prevent investments, slow down growth or reject it altogether. Environmental groups could then take legal action against virtually all investments. Every highway renovation would be in jeopardy!”
University of Augsburg’s constitutional law expert Prof. Josef Franz Lindner said: “The Basic Law regulates the basic rules of the state. Writing detailed political goals into the Basic Law is dysfunctional. It obliges state bodies to achieve goals at all costs and by all means, without any possibility of weighing up the options—while disrupting the economy and society. That would have disastrous consequences.”
