Dutch Parliament Makes a U-turn, Capitulates to Brussels' €800 Billion Defense Pledge

March 15, 2025 (EIRNS)—On March 11, the Dutch parliament narrowly voted against the EU intent to mobilize €800 billion for military spending, by a slim margin of 73-71. Of the four parties in the government coalition, only one plus the unelected Prime Minister (former head of Intelligence) Dick Schoof, voted in favor of the package; the other three voted against, namely, PVV [Wilders], BBB [Caroline van der Plas], and the NSC [Pieter Omtzigt] voted against.

However, three days later, following a private meeting between Schoof and the other three leaders of the coalition, they reached a compromise. It was agreed that they will support Brussels’ plan to raise €800 billion for military spending, provided that the 3% deficit ratio and the 60% debt ratio enshrined in EU treaties would be only “moderately violated.”
