Putin and Xi Witness Signing of Documents And Address the Media

President Vladimir Putin underlined the importance of the various agreements reached between Russia and China during President Xi Jinping’s visit to Moscow for Victory Day. He said that China and Russia seek an extensive expansion of bilateral trade by 2030. He said there would be progress made in the construction of the second Power of Siberia gas pipeline through Mongolia to China, assuring China of a significant supply of natural gas. He noted their common interest in the expansion of the Eurasian transportation corridor through Siberia to China, which provides the logistics for a significant increase of trade and investment between the two countries.

Putin lauded the work of Rosatom in helping China in the nuclear field and the collaboration with China in the Nika accelerator complex in Dubna. He noted the extensive collaboration between the two countries in education, with 21,000 students studying in China and 51,000 Chinese students studying in Russia.

Putin also underlined the common position of the two nations with regard to the fundamental nature of the UN-based system and the central role of the UN Security Council in world affairs.

Xi focused on their collaboration during World War II in the fight against fascism. “Eighty years ago against fierce militarists and Nazis, the armies and peoples of China and Russia selflessly fought shoulder to shoulder, wrote a majestic chapter in the history of mankind, covering themselves with unfading glory,” Xi said. “The great friendship of our peoples is tempered by fire and sealed with blood.” He urged that China and Russia “stay defenders of the world order in the spirit of equality and justice.”
