Poland's Tusk Seeks Nuclear Weapons for Warsaw

March 8, 2025 (EIRNS)—French President Emmanuel Macron has opened a Pandora’s Box with his “flexing” France’s nuclear weapons as a possible umbrella for Europe. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced to the Polish lower house, the Sejm, on March 7 that Poland was seeking to gain access to nuclear and other weapons in discussions with French President Macron.

“We won’t be afraid of anyone’s criticism—anything that contributes to the strengthening of defense capabilities will be implemented and used,” he stressed, adding that Poland is holding “serious talks” with the French on their nuclear umbrella project and that the talks were “at a very advanced stage.” He is also calling for increasing the Polish Army to 500,000 troops from the present 200,000 level. While not calling for conscription, he wants to see all Polish men receiving military training, in case of war.

Tusk still retains a commitment to NATO and to the United States, in spite of the present tensions between the EU and the U.S. “We are seeing a deep correction in U.S. policy with regard to Ukraine but we can’t turn our backs to it only because we don’t like it. We must be precise and honest in assessing what it means and what serves our interest and what doesn’t,” Tusk told the Sejm.
