March 21, 2025 (EIRNS)—In her March 20 weekly press briefing, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova issued a sharp warning to German citizens to wake up to where their country is heading before it is too late. The Bundestag vote to abolish existing restrictions on state borrowing in order to expend multi-billion-euro sums for Bundeswehr armaments is a decision to put Germany “onto a path of accelerated militarization,” in tandem with the “reckless anti-Russian course” adopted by its elites. “Does this not evoke a sense of déjà vu?” she asks, in section 8 of her briefing on “Militarization of the Federal Republic of Germany.”
Zakharova pointed to Germany’s economic collapse as the underlying driver of its reckless course. “Germany’s policy regarding the implementation of long-term objectives in the economy, finance, industry, trade, and production has been an absolute failure. Why? Because the absence of resources—the resource base that existed until Berlin ceased using Russian energy resources under U.S. orders—denies Germans the capacity to develop at the pace they anticipated and upon which their economy was structured. The internal economic collapse in Germany leaves them no alternative but to revert to a historically tested approach: militarization. They appear, however, to have forgotten the consequences: the absolute collapse of the nation.”
“Friedrich Merz, chairman of the CDU/CSU and aspirant to the chancellorship … went even further, urging preparation for confrontation with our country `in the coming years and decades.’
