March 12, 2025 (EIRNS)—President Donald Trump said last night after the joint U.S.-Ukraine statement was issued from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, that he would be speaking to Russian President Vladimir Putin in the next couple of days. “I’ll talk to Vladimir Putin,” he told reporters at the White House, reported TASS. “It takes two to tango.” Asked whether he planned to make the call later this week, he answered in the affirmative.
Trump expressed hope that Putin will accept the proposal for a ceasefire in Ukraine that was discussed at the talks in Saudi Arabia. “Hopefully he’ll also agree. And I really think that would be 75% of the way. The rest is getting it documented and, you know, negotiating land positions,” Trump said without elaborating.
Aboard Air Force One on March 10, Trump also sounded a somewhat different note on Russia and Ukraine. “You know I say they [Ukraine] don’t have the cards. Nobody really has the cards. Russia doesn’t have the cards. What you have to do is you have to make a deal, and you have to stop the killing. It’s a senseless war, and we’re going to get it stopped.”
