Sen. Chris Murphy, 2014: Bragged U.S. Overthrew Ukraine Government; 2025: Tried To Sabotage Trump-Zelenskyy Talks

March 5, 2025 (EIRNS)—Elon Musk re-posted to X on March 3, an earlier post which showed a video clip of Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), then a Congressman, during a 2014 Washington Journal interview, in which Murphy admits the U.S. role during 2013-2014 in overthrowing the legitimate Ukrainian government of Viktor Yanukovych, a coup which plunged Ukraine into years of turmoil and war.

Musk reposted the March 3 post to X by a blogger named KanekoaThe Great, possessing the Murphy interview, accompanied by Musk’s message, “Still very few people know about this,” inviting people to learn about it. In the video of the interview, Murphy says, “I think it was our role, including sanctions and threats of sanctions, that forced, in part, Yanukovych from office… We have not sat on the sidelines. We have been very much involved [in the Maidan overthrow]. Members of the Senate have been there [to Ukraine]. Members of the State Department have been there.”

Murphy further explained that “the Obama administration passed sanctions [against Ukrainian officials].… I really think that the clear position of the United States has in part been what has helped lead to this change in regime.” Murphy emphasized, “If Ukraine is part of the European Union and thus is part of this new trade agreement with the United States, that could result in billions of dollars in new economic opportunities for the U.S. We shouldn’t be shy about making clear that interest.” This admission from a member of the U.S. Congress, makes clear the coup was “OK by me.”

In February 2023, Musk stated that there is “no question that there was indeed a coup” in Kiev in 2014. Musk’s post shifts the story that the Russian special military operation in February 2022 was “unprovoked,” to the reality, that the overthrow of Yanukovych started the process, which then intensified with Ukraine’s killing of 13,000 Russian-speaking Ukrainians in Donetsk and Lugansk who resisted the newly-installed Nazi government.

But there is another story that defines the reason for Musk’s post. On March 3, when Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Washington, D.C., before had his meeting with President Donald Trump, he met with the Murphy, now in the Senate. Murphy, who is in the Anglo-American Atlantic Council circles, and who brought legislation to the Senate to impose sanctions against Russia in 2016, worked to organize Zelenskyy to reject the minerals deal that Trump and his team had sought for Zelenskyy to sign. The New York Post reported that on March 3, at 11:15 a.m., Senator Murphy posted on X, “Just finished a meeting with President Zelenskyy here in Washington. He confirmed that the Ukrainian people will not support a fake peace agreement where Putin gets everything he wants and there are no security arrangements for Ukraine.”

It is very unusual for a foreign leader to meet with his host head of state’s opposition before a first meeting with the President. Alongside the effort of Britain’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, Murphy worked to sabotage the aim of the Trump administration for peace. Obviously, Trump officials would have known of this before the Trump-Zelenskyy talks.
