March 25, 2025 (EIRNS)—Not long after the New York Times reported on supposedly leaked information that Elon Musk would be briefed on secret war plans against China (a claim denied by Musk, Hegseth, and Trump), a new “leak” has appeared:
Jeffrey Goldberg, editor of The Atlantic—who dropped out of his Ivy League university for the ignoble purpose of becoming an Israeli prison guard—claims that he was accidentally added by National Security Advisor Mike Waltz to a private Signal chat about attacking the Houthis in Yemen—days before the bombing began. The group supposedly included Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, among others, discussing the rationale for strikes and the political implications. Notably, Goldberg did not try to prevent the bombing by reporting on the messages promptly. He waited until after the attacks occurred, and left the group.
“This appears to be an authentic message chain,” said NSC’s Brian Hughes, adding that the conversation reflected solid coordination and that no national security risk occurred.
There is more than one hypothesis as to the reason behind this report by the pro-war Goldberg:
Democrats in Congress today used the opportunity of a pre-scheduled hearing to question Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and CIA Director John Ratcliffe, who were reportedly on the Signal thread, as well as FBI Director Kash Patel. The Democrats had the opportunity to show that they were in high dudgeon over sharing classified information in an inappropriate channel, painting Waltz as inept, and all participants as violating the law. Gabbard and Ratcliffe said that nothing classified was discussed, and that more formal means of recording any decisions were also made.
“Gabbard and Ratcliffe agreed to comply with an audit of their communications in response to questioning from Sen. Ron Wyden, a Democrat of Oregon, who pressed them on their claim that they did not participate in classified discussions on Signal,” reports Time magazine, which quotes Ratcliffe as saying “To be clear, I haven’t participated in any Signal group messaging that relates to any classified information at all,” and Gabbard as giving the same answer: “I have not participated in any Signal group chat, or any other chat on another app that contained any classified information.”
Politico claimed that the White House was debating whether Waltz will be forced out. “It was reckless not to check who was on the thread,” a senior official reportedly told Politico. “You can’t have recklessness in that role [of national security advisor].”
President Trump himself weighed in on the matter, telling NBC News that “Michael Waltz has learned a lesson, and he’s a good man.” Trump said that one of Waltz’s aides had added Goldberg to the chat. “It was the only glitch in two months, and it turned out not to be a serious one.”
So who added Goldberg? And why?
