U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance met Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin April 19, after meeting Italian PM Giorgia Meloni the previous day in Rome. Upon his arrival in Rome, Vance, a Catholic, expressed sentiments of gratitude for being in the Eternal City on the most important day of the year for Christians.
A Vatican press release says that the meeting was “cordial” and that Parolin and Vance discussed issues related to areas of conflict in the world, including migration. On the latter issue, the diplomatic formulation covers the distance between the two positions.
Prior to meeting with Vance, Cardinal Parolin gave an interview to the daily La Repubblica, touching upon issues of international relevance.
Asked about Trump administration policies, Parolin answered: “It is clear that the current U.S. Administration’s approach is very different from what we are used to,” adding: “The Holy See always strives to place the human person at the center, and many vulnerable people are suffering enormously, for example, due to cuts in humanitarian aid.
