Spectacular AfD Comeback Spreads Panic among German Elites

According to the latest Forsa poll published on April 1, the AfD party is only one percentage point behind the CDU-CSU, with 24% to 25%. This is a spectacular comeback in only five weeks, from the 20% to 28% result of the general elections on Feb. 23. This is entirely due to Chancellor Merz’s betrayal of his electoral promises. Support for Merz has also collapsed: only 28% consider him trustworthy, a drop of ten points since December.

The head of the CDU employees wing, Dennis Radtke, is sounding the alarm. “The current development is at the very least highly problematic and dangerous,” he told Handelsblatt.

Economist Veronika Grimm wrote on X: “I keep asking myself what kind of courage politicians should have to stop this disaster.” Economist Jan Schnellenbach warned: “We are heading for a complete disaster if SPD/Green policies continue to be pursued against the will of the majority.” He criticized, for example, the lack of “sustainable solutions” in social policy. Instead, more money is simply being poured into the system, he wrote on X.
