NBC News put out a story early yesterday, reporting that senior Defense Department officials are considering a proposal to withdraw as many as 10,000 troops from Eastern Europe. The units under consideration are part of the 20,000 troops the Biden administration deployed in 2022 following the start of Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine. Most of those 20,000 are in Romania and Poland. The numbers are still being discussed, but the proposal could involve removing up to half of the forces sent by Biden.

NATO Commander Gen. Christopher Cavoli told the House Armed Services Committee yesterday that he’s “consistently recommended” maintaining the current numbers of troops. “It’s my advice to maintain that force posture as it is now,” he said. Politico portrayed this as a “potential clash” between Cavoli and President Donald Trump.
