The Confederation of Sahel States are deepening their cooperation through the creation of a regional court and common high security prison. The three states, Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali, have taken this step to enhance their already deep security and military cooperation in combating their common terror threats, Sputnik reported.
The decision was made at a meeting of Confederation member states’ justice ministers in Bamako, capital of Mali, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the Confederation. It is not yet revealed where the court and prison will be located. The mandate of the court will be to hear cases concerning acts of terrorism, transnational organized crime, and gross human rights violations.
The three nations agreed to accelerate the harmonization of criminal legislation in the areas of terrorism; cybercrime; money laundering; human trafficking; and attacks on state sovereignty.
A regional database of individuals wanted or convicted of serious crimes will be created and will be accessible to the judicial and security authorities of the three confederated countries.
