Having taken away around 70% of Gaza’s land, Israel has now squeezed 2.2 million Gazans into 42 square miles—and with very little infrastructure still functioning. The population per square mile is now over 52,000, over 37 times more dense than the heavily-populated Netherlands (and over 41 times more dense than Israel Itself).

While the Warsaw Ghetto at its peak was 6-7 times more crowded than Gaza is now, the Nazis, it should be remembered, ran the concentration camps on two meals/day, pathetic as they were (a liter of a potato-based soup, and about 300 grams of black bread, served with about 25 grams of sausage, or margarine, or a tablespoon of marmalade or cheese). The latest data simulations from the Food and Agriculture Organization, a Rome-based UN agency, point to the average Gazan, as of a month ago, eating just 1,400 calories/day, about 39% below subsistence level. Some Gazans certainly are above subsistence level, but that also means that many are below 1,400 calories/day.
