The original co-sponsors of an Iran War Powers Resolution in the House of Representatives, Republican Thomas Massie (KY) and Democrat Ro Khanna (CA), were interviewed today on CBS News’ “Face the Nation” Sunday broadcast. Massie, a MAGA-based supporter of the President, expressed concern that Trump has clearly moved away from his promises to put an end to the “endless wars policy” which has dominated United States foreign policy during the past decades. He also lamented the fact that many of his Republican colleagues are now following the lead of AIPAC and the Israeli lobby in applauding Trump’s decision to bomb Iran.
Massie refuted House Speaker Mike Johnson’s claims that the President’s decision was permitted under the previous War Powers Resolution, which allowed a decision to go to war if there were an “imminent threat” to the United States. “That’s been misinterpreted. There was no imminent threat to the United States, which is what would authorize that,” Massie countered. “We haven’t been briefed. They should have called us all back, and frankly we should have debated this war powers resolution that Ro Khanna and I offered instead of staying on vacation.”
Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA), sponsor of a similar Iran War Powers Act, also gave an interview to “Face the Nation,” pointing out that even in previous “presidential wars,” like in Iraq, there was a debate prior to the decision-making.
