China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi on June 14 spoke with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, offering to play a “constructive role” in a resolution of the crisis. He said the Israeli attack on Iran was “unacceptable” and contrary to international law. He urged the two sides to de-escalate. “The immediate priority is to take concrete steps to prevent further escalation, and return to diplomacy which is the international community’s shared consensus,” Wang said. “Diplomatic solutions for the Iranian nuclear issue are not exhausted, and prospects for a peaceful settlement remain viable,” he said, according to South China Morning Post.
Wang Yi also spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. “Israel’s actions gravely violate the United Nations Charter and basic norms of international relations. Attacking Iran’s nuclear facilities sets a dangerous precedent with potentially catastrophic consequences.” This was also underlined at the special session of the UN Security Council by the Chinese ambassador to the UN Fu Cong.
