A resolution introduced June 16 by Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) under the War Powers Act would have asserted Congress’s right to declare war by requiring Congressional approval for the use of military force against Iran. “I am deeply concerned that the recent escalation of hostilities between Israel and Iran could quickly pull the United States into another endless conflict,” Kaine said in a June 16 statement introducing the resolution. He added on June 27, “I think the events of this week have demonstrated that war is too big to be consigned to the decision of any one person.”
Showing its complete inability to respond to reality, the Senate voted the resolution down on Friday, June 27 in a vote of 53-47, mostly along party lines. Breaking from party line votes were John Fetterman (D-PA), who voted against the resolution, and Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), who voted for it.
