The United Kingdom, France and Germany have agreed to restore tough UN sanctions on Iran by the end of August if there has been no concrete progress on a nuclear deal, two unnamed European diplomats told AP on July 15. The United Nations ambassadors of the three countries met on July 15 at Germany’s UN Mission to discuss a possible Iranian deal and reimposing the sanctions. The sanctions they’re talking about reimposing are the UN sanctions that were lifted as part of the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also spoke by phone with his E3 counterparts on July 14. They spoke “about fostering stability in the Middle East and ensuring Iran does not develop or obtain a nuclear weapon,” reported the State Department readout.
