GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GVH) will establish a BWRX-300 Engineering and Service Center in Canada’s Durham region, near the Ontario Power Generation’s Darlington New Nuclear Project site. GE Hitachi, based in Wilmington, North Carolina, made its announcement on June 23, after stating, earlier this year, that they will begin construction of their new SMR, the BWRX-300, near the same site. “Construction of the American-Designed SMR Launched in Canada”
The Engineering and Service Center, worth $50 million, will help create hundreds of high-paying jobs in the short term. These Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) should have, and would have been built in the U.S., if a U.S. power company had offered to build the reactor in the U.S. The facility will be built when the Canadians build the three additional BWRX-300s at the Darlington site. Each reactor is rated at 300 MW.
According to a GE Vernova press release, the facility will not only support the services of the new NPP, but also “serve as a hub for innovation and training, knowledge-sharing, supply chain engagement and workforce development. It is expected to draw up to 2,000 nuclear professionals, suppliers and international partners to Ontario annually, bringing significant economic benefits to the Durham region.”
