More voices denouncing the genocide in Gaza, are being heard internationally, including from inside Israel. On July 29, London’s The Guardian published a letter from 31 prominent Israeli figures, calling for the imposition of “crippling sanctions” on Israel and the declaration of a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. It’s not known whether it was also published or distributed in Israeli English or Hebrew-language media.
The brief letter reads: “We, Israelis dedicated to a peaceful future for our country and our Palestinian neighbors, write this with grave shame, in rage and in agony. Our country is starving the people of Gaza to death and contemplating the forced removal of millions of Palestinians from the Strip. The international community must impose crippling sanctions on Israel until it ends this brutal campaign and implements a permanent ceasefire.”
The 31 include intellectuals, academics, former government officials (former Israeli Attorney General Michael Ben-Yair), former speaker of the Knesset and former head of the Jewish Agency; and a number of recipients of the prestigious Israel Prize, Israel’s highest cultural honor.
