Competing DNC Resolutions Reveal Deep Divisions on Israel; Youth Want Action

The leadership of the Democratic National Committee had to scramble today, when an angry debate erupted over the treatment of two differing resolutions on the situation in Gaza presented to the group’s summer meeting in Minneapolis. The leadership passed the ostensibly more “balanced” resolution presented by DNC chair Ken Martin, and sponsored by the entire DNC leadership, which called for a ceasefire, the unconditional return of all hostages and the free flow of aid to Gaza, but blocked a second much stronger one that called for an arms embargo of Israel and suspension of all military aid. The latter was authored by 26-year-old DNC member Alison Minnerly from Florida.

According to NBC News today, there was an angry response from the room that Minnerly’s resolution had failed. Referring to strong rank-and-file support for much tougher treatment of Israel, one man stood up to shout “Ninety-three percent of Democrats. You gotta be fucking kidding me!”
