In response to the Aug. 24 statements by Ukraine’s acting president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban said yesterday: “President Zelenskyy has openly threatened Hungary. He acknowledged that Ukraine is attacking the Druzhba pipeline because we do not support it [Ukraine] joining the European Union. This further shows that Hungary has made the right decision” in questioning EU membership for Ukraine. Kiev has launched several attacks upon the Russian oil pipeline that five European countries, including neighboring Hungary, depend upon.
Orban accused Zelenskyy of “directly threatening Budapest,” adding that such “blackmail, bombing and intimidation” would not make it possible for a country to join the EU. “Mr. Zelenskyy’s statements will have a lasting impact.” Zelenskyy had noted: “We have always supported the friendship between Ukraine and Hungary. Now, the existence of the ‘Druzhba’ depends on Hungary’s position.”
