Russia and China Respond to U.S. Caribbean Military Gambit

The Trump administration’s planned deployment of warships into the Caribbean Sea off Venezuela’s coast for ostensible “anti-drug” actions, while asserting that the Venezuelan government itself is a drug cartel, is being watched internationally.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning was asked at her Aug. 21 press conference to comment on those actions that Latin American and Caribbean officials have denounced “as a violation of regional peace and security.” Her response was blunt:

“China opposes any move that violates the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and a country’s sovereignty and security. We oppose the use or threat of force in international relations and the interference of external forces in Venezuela’s internal affairs under any pretext. We hope that the United States will do more things conducive to peace and security in Latin America and the Caribbean region.”
