Ukraine Launches Drones Against Kursk Nuclear Power Plant

Kiev yesterday and today launched hundreds of drones against targets in Russia, on the occasion of Ukraine’s independence day. Although a substantial attack occurred against the huge oil and gas export facility at Ust-Luga, along the Baltic coast near St. Petersburg, what has received most international attention is the attack on the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant.

The press service of Rosenergoatom reported, according to TASS that there were no casualties and that fire crews were able to extinguish the local fire, but “the third unit of the Kursk nuclear power plant (NPP) has been unloaded by half…. The radiation background at the industrial site of the Kursk NPP and the adjacent territory has not changed and corresponds to natural values, the press service noted.”

Ukrainian attacks on the Kursk nuclear plant create a threat to nuclear safety, Alexander Khinshtein, the regional acting governor said on Aug. 24, reported Reuters. “They are a threat to nuclear safety and a violation of all international conventions,” Khinshtein wrote on his Telegram messaging app.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is “aware” of reports about a fire at the Kursk NPP in Russia, which it said started due to “military activity,” RT reported. The IAEA continued its evasive practice of not reporting the origin of the attacks—Ukraine—and only quoted Director General Rafael Grossi stating that “every nuclear facility must be protected at all times.”
