Do U.S. Policymakers Understand That Israel's Rampage Endangers the Egypt- Israel Peace Treaty?

Egypt’s semi-official daily Al-Ahram asked Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty in an interview datelined Sept. 17 two key questions. The first: If the Egyptian-Israeli Peace Treaty is in danger due to Israel’s actions? Second: “Are U.S. policymakers fully aware of the red lines that cannot be crossed?”

The specific red line cited by Al-Ahram is an Israeli operation to forcibly expel Palestinians through the Rafah Crossing.

Abdelatty replied that Egypt remains committed to that peace treaty, and will continue to uphold its responsibilities under it, a statement he then qualified with a “however.”

“However,” he went on, “Israel’s war in Gaza clearly reflects that its outlook on the future of this region is very different from ours and the Arab world. It is sowing the seeds of hatred and animosity, not seeds of peace and coexistence. The horrific crimes it has committed in Gaza will leave a long-lasting mark impacting generations….
