A presentation on Oct. 9 in Berlin, by the former head of the German Pen Club and author of 80 books, Wolfgang Bittner, was a notable and welcome dissent from the ongoing war craze in Germany. Bittner commented on his new book, Overview of Geopolitics: Germany, U.S.A., EU, and Russia. During his presentation he contrasted the danger of the potential onrushing economic ruin of Germany with the unthinking, unrelenting determination of the present German Chancellor to make the German military the strongest in Europe.
Dr. Bittner lamented the lack of public opposition against this destructive policy, and highlighted the danger of ever-tightening government surveillance, which paves the way into totalitarianism. He also described today’s Schachtian policy of austerity toward the civil economic sector, outlined in the “Operational Plan Germany,” as creating the “Readiness to impose restrictions ... a significant financial effort that will cost a lot of tax money.” Dr. Bittner warned of a revival of militarism in Germany, propagandized by the false claim that Russia is preparing to attack NATO. He quoted the president of the German teachers society Stefan Düll, who recently said, “The Ukraine war creates a new awareness of military threats, which must also be conveyed in schools.” He also cited German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, who has demanded that Germany’s schools should be completely opened to the military’s recruiting agents.
A paper from the Bundeswehr was cited, in which soldiers were urged to prepare for all eventualities in war, by writing wills, arranging their finances, and even ensuring the care of pets and family members in case of their death. They did this in order to ensure they are in a higher state of readiness for war if an ally were attacked.
