Egyptian Foreign Minister Welcomes Trump's Gaza Plan—with Caveats

We May Need More Time To Fill a Lot of Holes in the Trump Gaza Plan” Egypt’s Al Ahram headlined its long report on Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty’s Oct. 2 remarks at the French Institute of International Relations (IFRI) in Paris.

Abdelatty reported that Qatar, Türkiye and Egypt are talking with Hamas, to convince them to respond positively to the Trump plan, but suggested that “a wider window” than the three-four days President Donald Trump had given Hamas to accept (or else) was needed for “this opportunity to end this war” to be seized.

He cited “three very positive elements” in the plan as why Egypt “welcomed [the Trump plan] from the beginning. Ending the war. This is what we need right now to end this cycle of killings by the Israelis. Ending the war is extremely important. No annexation, no displacement.”

Abdelatty added, at the same time, that “there are a lot of holes that need to be filled. We need more discussions on how to implement it, especially on governance and security arrangements.” He said, for example, that Egypt is open to the idea of an international security force, but with the caveat that it must be authorized by the UN Security Council, and its mandate clearly defined. “If the mandate is to arrest the Palestinians upon request of the Israelis, this is not going to work. But if the mandate is to assist the Palestinians in running daily life and law enforcement, this should be in the hands of the Palestinians.”
