Merkel Visits Hungary, Talks About Need for Diplomacy with Putin

In the context of a blitz visit to Hungary on Oct. 6 to meet with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel granted an interview

to Hungary’s Partizan magazine, talking about her initiative from early 2021 to have a meeting between the EU and Russia, which, she said, could have prevented the outbreak of war in Ukraine. However, the Baltic states and Poland did not like it and blocked the initiative, which was not renewed, because Merkel was out of office after the German elections in September 2021.
