A lengthy phone conversation today, over 2 hours, between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, caught many off guard. Trump reported in a Truth Social post, on a two-level process, and that he and Putin had “agreed that there will be a meeting of our High Level Advisors, next week.” The U.S. delegation there will be led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, “together with various other people, to be designated.” After that: “President Putin and I will then meet in an agreed upon location, Budapest, Hungary, to see if we can bring this ‘inglorious’ War, between Russia and Ukraine, to an end.” He characterized his call with Putin as “very productive” and said that he believed “great progress was made with today’s telephone conversation.”
He also reported: “President Putin congratulated me and the United States on the Great Accomplishment of Peace in the Middle East.... I actually believe that the Success in the Middle East will help in our negotiation in attaining an end to the War with Russia/Ukraine.... We also spent a great deal of time talking about Trade between Russia and the United States when the War with Ukraine is over.” He ended: “President Zelenskyy and I will be meeting tomorrow, in the Oval Office, where we will discuss my conversation with President Putin, and much more. I believe great progress was made with today’s telephone conversation.”
Of some note: Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, the host of the upcoming Trump-Putin meeting, posted on X today: “The planned meeting between the American and Russian presidents is great news for the peace-loving people of the world. We are ready!” Orbán has a strong pro-Europe position, but one that finds Europe’s interests undermined by trying to isolate Russia. Also, he has a good history with Trump, is not a geopolitician, and views working with China on economic development as a completely positive idea.
Orbán attended the peace summit of the Gaza Peace Plan, and said, according to Daily News Hungary on Oct. 13 that, unless we give in to the temptations of war, Trump has the ability to negotiate peace, even in Ukraine. “We will offer all possible support to make this happen,” he affirmed. “Regardless of geographical location, size, or political influence, a global peace network is emerging—from the Middle East to the Caucasus and Ukraine—that works together for peace. Hungary is proud to be part of this peace network, a coalition of ordinary people,” he concluded.Oct. 16, 2025 (EIRNS)—A lengthy phone conversation today, over 2 hours, between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, caught many off guard.
